The Wonderful Grace of Jesus

Spiritual Formation / Worship //

We sang this old gospel song in church a couple of weeks ago and the words of this old hymn hit me in a new way. Do the children of my church know this great truth? Have I communicated the wonderful grace of Jesus to my covenant children?

I know that when teaching children week after week we need to make sure that we teach them the truth of the gospel every week. Not just that Jesus came and died on the cross, but that they have sin in their lives and are in need of a savior. That the Savior is Jesus and he has given grace beyond all that we can imagine so that we may be in a restored relationship with the Creator, Sustainer, and King—our holy God.

I have been struck by this wonderful grace lived out in the body of Christ in my own church and have a sense that truly this is a glimpse of heaven. When teaching children’s church last week, we had these cute 5-year-olds from China. They were singing and doing motions and proclaiming the name of Jesus in their worship. Just as they were singing—as only 4 and 5-year-olds can do—it dawned on me that only a few short months ago they lived in a country where they may have never heard the name of Jesus. But instead the wonderful grace of Jesus has brought them to a home where they are not only hearing the name of Jesus but are in a church where they can SING his name with absolute freedom!

Another sign of grace happened this past Sunday. We have a very special young woman with down syndrome who wanted to stand in the front of the church and proclaim her faith in Jesus. Our pastor did an amazing job of helping our congregation see the simplicity of true faith that this young woman professed. As our big 6’8” pastor put his arm around this sweet young woman to pray for her, I was once again struck by the wonderful grace of Jesus.

I could go on and on about the wonderful grace of Jesus that I see over and over again, but am once again struck by the words of the hymn in my own life. For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me, all sufficient grace for even me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sin; how shall my tongue describe it, where shall its praise begin?

Taking away my burden, setting my spirit free; for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus, deeper than the mighty rolling sea; higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain, all sufficient grace for even me.

Broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far than all my sin and shame; O magnify the precious name of Jesus, praise his name!
