Healthy KidMin Leaders: An Experiment in Listening to God

Leadership / Prayer //

Lately I have found myself really wanting to listen to God, but as someone who is a full-time wife and mother and works full-time in Children’s Ministry, I find it’s hard to make time to really focus on listening.  So many things to do each day at church and then come home and cook supper, do homework with kids, take them to sports practices, get home and get them in the shower and then to bed.  By the end of the day I am completely wiped out.  All I hear is my bed calling my name!

Last night I was looking through my nightstand drawer where I keep a lot of my devotionals.  I came across one tucked way in the back and thought it was the answer to my prayer for helping me to listen to God.  It’s called Enjoy the Silence and it’s written by Maggie & Duffy Robbins.  I read it about 8 years ago and really enjoyed it, but this is one of those books that youenjoy the silence can never read too many times.  It’s a 30-day experiment in listening to God.  It focuses on the practice of “lectio divina”, which in Latin translates  to “divine reading”.  They give you a passage each day and you are to read it several times, meditate on it, listen, and also journal what you feel God is saying to you.  They give you some questions to help guide you through it as well. One of the quotes from the book says, “Lectio divina is about creating space and time for God to speak to us”.  I really love that quote because I must be intentional about making time with God.  I have always done a morning devotion of some sort, but have found that it’s gotten harder in the mornings because my kids wake up and come downstairs and talk to me.  I must be more intentional about getting up earlier!

To be a healthy leader in Children’s Ministry, I really need to listen to God.  I need to know what God wants me to do.  The only way I can do that is by practicing my listening skills.  So, I wanted to see who out there (KidMin leader or not) would be willing to do this experiment with me.  Who would like to commit to spending 30 days listening to God?  I would be there to encourage you along the way and then after the 30 days would love to see how your experiment went and what you felt God was saying to you.

You can buy the book new on Amazon for $8.99:   http://www.amazon.com/Enjoy-Silence-Experiment-Listening-invert/dp/0310259916/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411141729&sr=8-2&keywords=Enjoy+the+Silence

I think there are even some used books on there for less than $4.00.  You can even get the Kindle version for around $4.00, too

If you are ready to listen to God and want to do this 30-day experiment with me, please email me and let me know.  That way, I can be praying for you as we do this experiment together.  You can email me at:  kidmindays@gmail.com
