A Word About VBS Fun Run

VBS //

II Timothy 4:7-8 has been one of my favorite scripture passages for many years. After watching my father, Carl, battle spindle cell melanoma for 3 years and 3 months, my mother, my sisters and I were discussing a passage to include on his tombstone. This was the one on which we settled. Following the engraved reference it simply read, “He kept the faith.” His entire life embodied this passage. I am so grateful that my earthly father, and mother, taught me how to run my own race, to fight to finish well no matter the cost, and to keep the faith until I see my Heavenly Father face-to-face.

The idea for this theme began with the Lord whispering the word “marathon” in my spirit. I then called the core of my VBS Dream Team, Amy Fenton, Diane Dawson and Dana Anderson, and invited them to lunch to share what the Lord had given me. We began brainstorming and within minutes Diane said, “The theme verse has to be II Timothy 4:7-8.” Immediately there was a lump in throat and tears in my eyes. I knew we were on the right track. (Pun intended. J)

We live in a time when it is crucial that we train our kids to run their race well. To equip them with the tools they need to “fight the good fight”, which means constantly pointing them to the character of Jesus, so beautifully stated in the “I AM” statements He made. We are training young warriors for the Kingdom…worshiping warriors, determined to finish well and keep the faith.

My prayer for this curriculum is that once you and your kids have completed the program, you will feel closer to Jesus than ever before. And that you will be inspired to let “The Light of the World” shine through you, to follow “The Good Shepherd” wherever He leads, to be completely satisfied by “The Bread of Life, saved and refreshed by “The Living Water” and empowered to press on by “The Vine.”

Keep the faith…

About the Author

For the past 26 years, Jeff Slaughter has been laughing singing, dancing and worshiping with kids! His heart’s desire is to equip them with God’s word through music and to help them discover what a passionate relationship with Jesus is all about. Having grown up in Greenwood, Mississippi, he first attended Mississippi State University, then transferred to Nashville to attend Belmont University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music/Composition and Arranging Emphasis. Upon graduating, he signed with StarSong Publishing and his first radio single, “One More Broken Heart” became a #1 hit for the group Point of Grace. Slaughter, who has most recently signed with Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, has written scores of songs for Lifeway Christian Stores VBS curriculum, including the music for Outrigger Island, Boomerang Express, Saddle Ridge Ranch, Big Apple Adventure and Amazing Wonders Aviation. One of Slaughter’s best-loved VBS songs includes “We Believe” from 2005′s Ramblin’ Road Trip VBS curriculum. The song also became a top-selling choral anthem for adult choirs that same year. More than 46 million children have sung Slaughter’s songs over the years, according to Jerry Wooley, VBS Ministry Specialist at LifeWay Christian Resources. Slaughter has written a new musical titled The Christmas Shoe Tree, the No.1-selling kid’s Christmas musical to-date in 2012 for Brentwood-Benson. Brentwood-Benson has also just released his 2013 VBS curriculum titled Jeff Slaughter VBS World Tour. During his career, Slaughter has toured throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia, Central America, Canada, Asia and Africa. He has also had the opportunity to be involved in the country music arena as well. He has toured with artists such as Faith Hill, Kenny Rogers, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty and Suzy Boggus. “I love to help kids understand what a miracle it is that God made our voices to sing! The Bible doesn’t say sing if you’re a great singer, or if you like the song…it just says SING,” says Slaughter. “We tend to take things like that for granted, but when the children of Israel went into battle, they put the worshippers on the front line because they knew that if they entered into the battle with praise, they were going to win! What a powerful truth the Lord shows us through that example! When we choose to sing praise in the middle our own battles, we win! I have learned that lesson throughout my life and I want to do all I can to pass that on to this generation!” You can check out Jeff’s new project “Under God,” a 14 song collection produced by brothers, Preston and Spencer Dalton. it is available for download here and on iTunes.
